What does induction cooking mean? Which Sea to Summit cookware is induction compatible?

An induction cooktop creates an oscillating electrical current in the pot or pan, which generates heat within the cookware itself. Because it doesn’t rely on radiant heat, the cookware begins heating immediately.

There’s no combustion, which means no exhaust gases – a big advantage in enclosed spaces like vehicles.

Since there’s no open flame, induction cooktops can even be used in areas with fire bans on open flames.

What makes cookware induction compatible?

Induction cooking requires that the cookware be magnetisable. An induction cooktop creates a low-frequency alternating current that transfers heat into the cookware via magnetism.

All of the larger (over 3L) Detour Pots and the Detour Pan are made of a grade of stainless steel that is magnetic. They will work on any induction cook plate.

The Detour collapsible pot and Detour Kettle will work on some – but not all – induction cooking setups. See ‘restrictions’ below.

There are very few camp kitchen products on the market that are both collapsible and induction compatible.

Restrictions on induction compatibility

• The Detour 1.8L Pouring Pot and the Detour Kettle have bases made of a grade of stainless steel that is not magnetic. The process of forming the base during manufacture makes the base magnetic (to a degree) around its circumference.
• The 1.8L Detour Pot and Detour Kettle  will not work on lower-powered induction cooktops, or on cooktops running on a lower-powered inverter. Some cooktops will simply not ‘recognize’ the 1.8L Pot or Kettle as magnetisable, and the cook plate will not switch on.
• Frontier, Alpha, Sigma, and X-Series cookware are not induction compatible. 

Use with conventional stoves?

An induction-compatible pot, pan or kettle can be used on a gas burner / camp stove, or a radiant electric stove with no issues whatsoever.
