The outer fabric on our Air Sprung Cell mats is made from high-tensile, high thread-count nylon. It’s extremely strong and durable, and includes a coating that improves repairability and helps reduce slipperiness. In some cases, though, this fabric can create noise when it rubs against the surface of a tent floor or sleeping bag.
While switching to a softer or textured fabric could make the mat quieter, it would also reduce durability. We design our mats to be tough and long-lasting, and using softer materials would compromise that performance.
If the sound is an issue for you, there are a few simple things that can help. Placing a t-shirt or camp towel under the hips or shoulders, throwing your mat into a sleeping bag liner, or using a lightweight groundsheet inside the tent can all help reduce the friction and noise during sleep.
