Will my down sleeping bag fail in wet conditions?

We use Ultra-Dry Down insulation throughout our Down Sleeping Bag range. Along with DWR coatings on all sleeping bags, a little moisture is not a problem. The PFC-free treatment means down retains 60% more loft, absorbs 30% less moisture and dries 60% faster than untreated down when wet.

When down becomes wet, the clusters can clump together and lose loft, significantly reducing the bag's ability to provide insulation. In prolonged wet conditions, a saturated down sleeping bag may feel cold and take longer to dry than a synthetic sleeping bag.

To get the best performance from your down sleeping bag:

  • Store and transport it in a waterproof dry bag.
  • Avoid contact with tent walls where condensation may form.
  • Ensure good tent ventilation to minimise moisture buildup.
  • Air the sleeping bag out whenever conditions allow.
  • Consider using a sleeping bag liner to help manage moisture and keep the bag cleaner.

With appropriate care and moisture management, a down sleeping bag can perform exceptionally well in a wide range of conditions, including damp environments, while offering an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio.

In extremely wet conditions - a Synthetic Sleeping Bag may be your best option.
