Air loss in Aeros Pillows is most frequently due to a puncture, or an issue with the airproof barrier or one of the RF welds.
(most weld or airproof barrier issues are due to moisture from condensed breath remaining in the pillow during longer-term storage. For this reason, we recommend storing your Aeros Pillow unrolled with the valve open).
If your Sea to Summit Aeros Pillow is losing air, there are a few simple checks you can perform to identify the cause.
1. Check the valve
Please ensure:
- The inflation valve is fully closed after inflating the pillow.
- There is no dirt, sand, hair, or debris preventing the valve from sealing correctly.
- The valve has not been accidentally left partially open.
2. Inspect for punctures or damage
Small punctures can be difficult to locate. To find a leak:
- Fully inflate the pillow.
- Listen carefully for escaping air.
- Gently squeeze different areas of the pillow while holding it close to your ear.
- If the leak isn't obvious, apply a light mixture of soapy water to the pillow surface and seams and look for bubbles forming.
Pay particular attention to:
- Seams
- Areas around the valve
- Locations that may have come into contact with sharp objects
3. Consider environmental factors
Changes in temperature can affect air pressure inside the pillow.
- A pillow inflated in warm conditions may feel softer when temperatures drop overnight.
- This is normal and does not necessarily indicate a leak.
Submersion Test
If you are unable to locate the source of air loss, you can perform a simple submersion test:
- Fully inflate the pillow and close the valve securely.
- Submerge the pillow in a sink, bathtub, or container of water.
- Slowly press on different sections of the pillow while watching for a steady stream of bubbles.
- Pay particular attention to the seams and valve area, as these are the most common leak points.
- Once the air loss has been identified, mark the location and remove the pillow from the water.
- Thoroughly dry the pillow
